Role: Project Manager - Product Designer
Time Frame: September - December 2023
Volunteer matching and management processes are often tedious and time-consuming. Volunteers struggle to find verified opportunities online, while organizations face challenges in recruiting due to limited recognition and resources. Current platforms for volunteer matching are scarce, and social media's focus on personal updates fails to foster meaningful volunteering connections.
Our platform offers personalized recommendations using advanced algorithms to match volunteers with opportunities that suit their interests and skills. Volunteers can also showcase their achievements through our 'Achievement Sharing' feature, while organizations benefit from streamlined recruitment and efficient tracking of volunteer hours with our system.
As a project manager and product designer for the Webridge website, I designed and developed the organization site, which serves as the central hub for organizations to list their volunteer opportunities and manage their profiles. Additionally, I created the volunteer account page, which allows users to sign up, track their activities, and view personalized recommendations for suitable volunteer opportunities.
I've embraced a design thinking approach that enables me to deeply empathize with user needs, generating evidence-based ideas to drive innovative solutions.
Tools Used
In September 2023, we interviewed 10 individuals in Vancouver to understand their volunteer experiences, including how they find opportunities, track their hours, and stay updated on applications. We also spoke with organizations to learn about their recruitment methods and how they connect with potential volunteers. This research aimed to empathize with both volunteers and organizations, identify their challenges, and uncover areas for improvement in the volunteer matching process.
User Interview and Conduct:
The initial interview revealed that:
User Persona
Webridge is designed to bridge the gap between volunteers and organizations, providing a comprehensive platform that simplifies recruitment and management. It aims to enhance visibility for non-profits by offering a centralized space where they can connect with potential volunteers, track their progress, and manage attendance efficiently. The platform features tools for verifying volunteer backgrounds, reviewing applications, and filtering candidates, ensuring a streamlined process for both volunteers and organizations. By addressing challenges related to social media visibility and volunteer coordination, Webridge offers a unique solution tailored to meet the needs of both parties, ultimately fostering more effective and meaningful volunteer engagements.
After completing the Empathize and Define stages through persona development, our focus shifted towards Ideation and Design. We meticulously mapped out the information architecture and delineated user flows to ensure a coherent user experience. Subsequently, we embarked on crafting initial wireframes that depicted essential user journeys. These wireframes served as a foundation for developing mid-fidelity prototypes, which were rigorously tested with users to glean valuable insights. Incorporating feedback from these tests, we iteratively refined the prototype and optimized user flows. This iterative process culminated in the creation of higher-fidelity mockups, aligning the design closely with user expectations and usability standards.
Competitors
Our key competitors—Volunteer BC, Volunteer Match, and Volunteer Connectors—focus mainly on volunteer recruitment and personalized recommendations. However, they lack features for tracking volunteer hours and sharing achievements. WeBridge distinguishes itself with QR code-based hours tracking and achievement sharing, allowing volunteers to log their hours accurately and showcase their accomplishments, which sets us apart in addressing the entire volunteer lifecycle.
Refined Wireframe after Improvements
We have come to the most end stage of creating mockups and prototypes after defining the problems and developing solutions, which will be handed over to the developers. This marks the completion of the UI design after extensive usability testing and wireframe improvements to ensure optimal functionality.
The showcase took place in December 2023, featuring three guest speakers. After everyone had the opportunity to test our product, we received not only compliments but also valuable feedback for our project, particularly regarding my analytical contribution.
Learning
After this project, I gained substantial experience in UX and UI enhancement, having to adjust layouts extensively and conduct deeper research. As a newcomer to the field, this experience helped me develop a stronger understanding of user-centered design and improve my skills in creating intuitive and effective interfaces.
